Week 3 - 2014 - Ravens
I forget who said it, maybe former Steeler Ryan Clark, but I was watching NFL Network one day and the comment was made about the Browns that you know if you play them close, they'll find a way to lose the game (EDIT It was former Ravens and current Browns coach Wilbert Montgomery). Well whoever said it had it right. Play like a Brown, Pettine says. Boy did they. He should use Coach like a Brown, too, because boy they did. They blew another game, 23-21 to the Ravens. They played like the Browns we've all seen over the past 16 seasons. What other franchise consistently loses games they should win? I can think of a couple teams blowing a couple games, but the Browns do it almost weekly. At least the Jaguars are a consistent dumpster fire, same with the Raiders. I think those two are the only other franchises I hold in the same esteem that I hold the Browns. Garbage teams that make stupid mistakes, but they don't just give away wins like the Browns do. NO ONE DOES!!!! It seems impossible to blow it week in and week out. But no, alas, it's possible. Because this team will do it. They'll find a way to lose.
I don't even know where to begin. First of all, what did we as a collective fan base do to deserve having to be emotionally invested in this team, other than being born in a certain area or having parents that were fans? No one in the past 20 years has just up and decided "Oh I'm going to be a Browns fan that seems fun!" Because it's a horrifying existence. I want to change sides, to become a fan of an actual, respectable team. Maybe the Colts or the Bears. But I just can't. And I hate myself for it.
Instead I get treated to games like the one on Sunday. Let's just check some boxes on how much this loss sucked. At home. Check. To the scum of the Earth, and a division rival. Check. Had the lead in the 4th quarter. Check. Lost on a last second play. Check. Yup I'd say that about covers it. It sucked, and not just a little. A bunch. This group of Browns had a chance to be different than the other Browns, and announce that they aren't going to be a punching bag in the AFC North anymore, that they have a chance to really make some noise this year with a soft schedule, that it's not going to be the same old Browns. But it is. IT ALWAYS IS.
Mike Pettine put the loss on himself and the coaches. Uhh yeah Mike, that's where I'd start. So Mike Pettine has a defensive coordinator, Jim O'Neil. And Jim O'Neil calls the defenses sometimes, but Mike Pettine wants to call the defenses sometimes. And then for the second straight game there are 12 players in the defensive huddle on multiple occasions. Hmmm, I wonder what would cause confusion with that streamlined setup? Garbage.
Chris Tabor, our special teams coach, is literally the worst coach in the league at his position. Somehow, like a little blond parasite, he keeps surviving coaching changes. He is horrible. People think he's good. He's not. I've been saying it for two years. His unit loses the Browns games. On a team without a bunch of big play offensive threats you cannot lose the special teams battle, but we do. Often. His unit has consistently underperformed, going back as far as last year. Remember that one time when we had two punts blocked in one quarter? That was fun. On Sunday he tried to up even that performance. First play of the game, offsides on the kickoff. Two missed field goals, well I guess one was blocked so that doesn't count, right? His long snapper is low on everything, his kicker can't hit a kick further than about 40 yards, and the defensive tackle protecting the right side let a guy run right in front of him to block a kick. We lost by 2, by the way. Oh and let's not ignore the fact that when we needed our punter to let one fly on the last series he powered one for 40 yards. Oh and why were we in that position? Because Travis Benjamin, the most terrified football player I've ever seen, let a punt go sailing over his head instead of fair catching it, giving up 20 yards of field position in the process. TRAVIS BENJAMIN IS AFRAID TO GET HIT. GET HIM THE F OFF THE FIELD!!!!!!! He had no business being out there, especially with a reliable option like Jim Leonhard on the bench. Chris Tabor. Billy Cundiff. Christian Yount. Travis Benjamin. Get rid of them all they are putrid. You could put this loss squarely on this unit, and you wouldn't be wrong.
Defensively, in addition to the stupid penalties, not a great game. They were pretty much gashed by the Ravens run game. Ahtyba Rubin is just stealing Jimmy Haslam's money at this point. He can't stop the run. Going into this last game he was PFF's worst rated defensive tackle, I can't imagine this performance changed that. Craig Robertson is still playing for some reason. I just can't figure it out. But nonetheless, the defense did rise up and make some critical stops when they needed to. They stopped Baltimore on a key fourth quarter 4th down, they held them to a field goal from the goalline to maintain the lead, and they got the Browns the ball back with a chance to close out the game. But when it was really time to make a play, they played like Browns. Joe Haden, $67.5 million dollar Pro Bowl shut down cornerback, gets burned on a straight go route by a 36 year old wide receiver, and that's your ballgame. Joe Haden, maybe the best defensive player on this team, has been absolutely destroyed in every game this season. He and Gilbert, this great cornerback duo, have been simply awful. If they don't get better this team isn't winning too many more games. And get set before the plays start, Browns defensive backs. Bill Kern is right, they never look ready for the snap.
On offense, no team in the league knows how to waste momentum like the Browns. Lets take a look at some big plays.
43 yard pass completion to Travis Benjamin! Have to call timeout after the play.
21 yard pass to Miles Austin on a 2nd and 23! Next play, Brian Hoyer 1 yard scramble, then punt on 4th and 1 from the Baltimore side of the field. (Punt went into the endzone, of course). Never punt on 4th and 1 from the other teams side of the field.
Creative pass play to Manziel for 40 yards! Penalty on Terrance West.
22 yard run by Crowell! Next play, some sort of reverse counter to Taylor Gabriel that lost 10 yards.
Interception by Tashaun Gipson!! Next play 8 yard loss on a bungled looking pitch play to Crowell.
70!!! Yard pass to Gabriel (who fell down on a perfect pass)! Next play, one yard loss on a West run. Then a sack. Then a touchdown except Hoyer threw the ball 5 yards past the line of scrimmage. Then a easy field goal. Blocked.
And the offense actually played well! Hoyer had his best game, probably the best game a guy like that can have, and he lost at home and put 21 points up. When Hoyer had to make a throw, even tossing out the second to last series where he threw two incompletions when they could have run the clock, when he absolutely had to hit Andrew Hawkins between the 1 and the 6, to seal the game, he was behind Hawkins who couldn't pull it in. Ballgame. He played well, I'm not discounting that. No turnovers, long sustained drives, big plays. But when they needed it he missed Hawk. And they lost, and that's what matters.
I hate the Ravens on a plane that not even the Steelers can touch. I hate them with all of my being. I hate losing to them. I hate that the Browns lose games consistently that they should win. I hate that I'm invested in this team after seeing this for so long. I hate Chris Tabor. But most of all I hate the feeling in this city after a loss like that. This team had a chance to do something big, and they let us all down. Offense, defense, special teams, coaching. All of them. They all played like Browns. Someday, that will mean something different. Not today.

Week 9 - 2013
Dear Jason Campbell -
I'm sorry. I'm sorry I lumped you in the same category as Brandon Weeden. It was an honest mistake. I just didn't know. I'm really sorry. You just played a great football game. You played through pain all game after Haloti Ngata's giant body tried to smash your insides, making throws and moving the pocket with your legs. You completed 23 out of your 35 passes, for 262 yards and 3 touchdowns. You didn't have a turnover for a second straight week. You are the reason the Browns won. You are the first Browns quarterback since 2007 to beat the Ravens, and I hate the Ravens. It was glorious. You outplayed the Super Bowl MVP, Joe Flacco. So thank you, and I'm sorry. And tell Devone Bess I'm super sorry for being super mean to him, too. He played great. And War Damn Eagle from my Auburn folk.
Love Eric.
Seriously though I was wrong about Jason Campbell. I really didn't think it mattered who the quarterback was after Brian Hoyer was injured. But clearly it matters. Jason Campbell played a fantastic football game on Sunday, leading the Browns to their first win over the Ravens since 2007, breaking the streak of 11 straight losses. That is insane. The last time the Browns beat the Ravens Josh Gordon was a junior in high school. Joe Thomas was a rookie. Romeo Crennel was the coach. Goodness that is almost unfathomable in today's NFL. The 24-18 victory also marks the first time the Browns have defeated Joe Flacco and John Harbaugh. Lookout NFL here come the Browns!
The Browns are now 4-1 when Campbell or Hoyer have started, 0-4 when Brandon Weeden started.
His offensive weapons certainly helped him out this week. Devone Bess, that's what we've been expecting. What a great bounce back game for him, catching two of Campbell's touchdowns. He only caught 3 passes, but two were on fourth down. He made the play of the game when he came back and secured Campbell's pass on fourth and one late in the game. That's what we've been waiting for from him. And seriously what the hell Greg Little? Why can't you play like that every week? Little was everywhere, snaring passes in traffic and showing some speed after the catch. Of course he had two personal foul penalties, but screw the Ravens after 11 straight losses it was good to see some swagger and attitude. The Browns were the better, more talented team. Offensively, defensively, and on special teams. And I'm really starting to love Rob Chudzinski. I love the aggressiveness, going for it on 4th and 1 early in the game and converting for the touchdown, and late in the game to secure the victory.
Defensively, the Browns were really good. Baltimore couldn't run the ball. They couldn't really protect Flacco, although he made some plays with his feet. The defensive front got great pressure, from just about everybody. Armonty Bryant looks like he's going to be a pretty good player. He certainly looks the part with those long arms and seems to use his hands well when pass rushing. He appears to be a pretty good find by Banner and Lombardi. Phil Taylor, Desmond Bryant, and Ahtyba Rubin are fun to watch. Joe Haden got his first interception of the season. TJ Ward is playing at a Pro-Bowl level. Ray Horton's defense really is fun to watch, they are fast and swarming and everything I want from a defense. I still think they're a couple players away from being really really great, but I do love watching them. The Ravens had two weeks to get a gameplan put together coming off the bye, and the Browns stymied them pretty good. It was Harbaugh's first loss coming off of a bye.
The one thing I'll say is that they had the Ravens in third and long almost the entire game and allowed them to convert 7 out of 16 times. That's not terrible but I think they're good enough to get off the field more frequently. And again seems like nitpicking here but on offense they need to run to the left. All game they ran right and got stuffed. Joe Thomas is really good, maybe they should run behind him.
So here we are again. When I convince myself that this team is going to lose, and that it is better for them to lose, they suck me back in. They are 4-5 and have a bye week, then Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. They certainly have a chance to get back into the race in the AFC North, and again this game proves that with pretty good play from the quarterback, this team is pretty good. Just how good we will find out here in the second half of the season. After the roller coaster ride the first nine games have been, I'm sure it will be interesting.

Week 2 - 2013
The Browns suck. Again. It's official. One touchdown in two games. Moronic coaching decisions, bad offensive line play, dropped passes, and a lousy quarterback. And another loss to Baltimore, even though they shut the Ravens out in the first half and allowed only 14 points the entire game.
I'm done defending Brandon Weeden. He's not any good, he's not a starting NFL quarterback. He can't process what's happening fast enough, he locks onto his primary target, he takes bad sacks. I'll never buy the "no quarterback can win with this team" argument. Tom Brady just won a game on Thursday with receivers (somehow) worse than the Browns have. How? He made the one pass that he needed to when he needed to. Brandon Weeden couldn't accomplish that, missing an absolutely wide open Chris Ogbonnaya on the one play that the Browns were able to successfully execute. Here's the sideline reaction to that abortion. Think they believe in this guy?
Greg Little is another one. I'm done defending him also. 3 dropped passes and then 3 more traffic violations after the game. If Chud wants to send a message to this collection of scrubs benching Greg Little would be a great place to start. No separation and lousy hands is no way to play receiver in the NFL, son.
3 delay of game penalties. That probably falls as much on the coaches as it does on Weeden. They stunk too. Another game, another fourth quarter with no touches for Trent Richardson. In a one possession game. Pass rush causing problems? No screens. No draws. Nothing to slow them down. As sad as it sounds I'd kill to see this team lose 35-31. Just some offense, please.
Our defense is one starting caliber cornerback away from being extremely good. Mingo looked like a legitimate double digit sack threat. The front seven has shut down the run in the first two games. What game are the Browns going to win this season 6-3 that is going to cost this team a chance at the first pick? Any takers?
I'm stunned I thought this team would be any good. Because they aren't. Their problems extend past the quarterback, but that's where it starts. Question I've been pondering for the past few weeks, and please feel free to weigh in. Hypothetically, if Philip Rivers is the quarterback of this Browns team, are they a playoff team? Rivers has had no receivers, a good (but now old) tight end, and a decent running back for the past few seasons. Poor offensive line. San Diego's defense has been good but not as good as the Browns have this season. And he's had the Chargers at 8-8 or 7-9 the past two years. So, hypothetically, if Rivers was the Browns quarterback do they make the playoffs? I say yes.
But again, for the quarterback doesn't matter crowd, if you put Weeden on the Ravens yesterday, is there anyway that they win that game?
Nothing says Browns football more than this fourth down failure yesterday.
After seeing Brandon Weeden for 2 games this season, there will be a new quarterback in Cleveland next year. It will more than likely be one of these guys.
Teddy Bridgewater - Louisville

He's athletic and extremely accurate and comes from a pro style offense. 6'3 and lean. Does the little things like sells play fakes and looks off defenders. I've seen him play the least of any of the top guys but he's the consensus top qb at this point from most experts. An RG3 type player. draftbreakdown.com has 10 games here
Tajh Boyd - ClemsonHe's thicker and shorter than Bridgewater, but also extremely accurate. Plays from the spread. Has won a lot of games at Clemson and is a guy I really like. I use Steve Young as his comp, he can be my quarterback for sure. Ten games from draftbreakdown.com if you're bored here
Marcus Mariota - Oregon
Probably my favorite of the qbs that will be eligible. He's big at 6'4 fast and accurate. He's playing in Oregon's offense so people will dismiss him but he's way better than Dennis Dixon or Darren Thomas. He's going to be most successful in a more wide open fast paced scheme but that's the way the NFL is going. Kaepernick-like skills. Highlights here
Johnny Manziel - Texas A&MDespite all the chatter today about how the Browns were "scouting" him at the Bama game, there were also a ton of other prospects that they were probably looking at. So don't buy that nonsense, it's far too early for that. I just don't see him as the Browns qb. Short and fast with huge hands. He's a great college player and I'm torn about whether he'll be a legit NFL quarterback but I don't see the Browns taking that chance. This regime's future hinges on whatever quarterback they choose and I can't see them banking on Manziel. I like him though, probably a turnover machine in the NFL. Vids here
Brett Hundley - UCLA
I haven't seen him play enough but some people really like him. I'd rather have any of the guys listed above including Johnny Manziel, but I reserve the right to change my mind. Highlights
So yeah, this is where we're at. The Monday after the second game of the season it is already time to figure out which quarterback will be the next one ruined by this sad sack franchise. AWESOME. Browns football everybody.

Week 9
I'm really mad at myself. Mad that I made the mistake of breathing in the fumes of optimism floating around this town this past week. Mad for believing that the Browns were sick of being doormats in their division. Mad for falling for the bravado that this young team exuded all week. Mad that I thought that there was no way the Browns were going to lose a 10th straight game to those scumbags, the most vile and wretched team in the league. Mad that I firmly believed that the Browns would seize the opportunity to win their third straight game at home against a reeling team on the decline. Mad that I genuinely believed that the Browns were going to come out in front of their home fans, the best in the league, and punch the Ravens right in the mouth. And most of all I'm mad that I believed that Pat Shurmur, fighting for his job, could coach this team to victory. And after the game, like most Sunday's watching this sad sack franchise, I was just mad. Ultimately it was Baltimore 25 Cleveland 15, the only positive being that it will more than likely be the nail in the coffin of possibly the worst coach in this franchise's history, Pat Shurmur.
This was going to be the game that marked the new era of the Browns, the most important game in at least the past few seasons. The Ravens, the old Browns, with that awful ART patch on their jerseys, verses the new Browns, under new ownership. Out from the nightmare that was Modell's pal Al Lerner and his family's ownership, this was a chance for this Browns team to show it's fans, loyal through all the absolute crap that has gone on since Modell sold his soul in 1995, that things are different now. Instead, it was the same old Browns, the ones we've seen since 1999. Another disappointing loss when things look to be turning around. On Sunday morning, that turnaround seemed to be right around the corner. On Sunday evening, that turnaround seems miles away. It was just one game, it was the difference between 3-6 and 2-7. But it was the difference between hope for the rest of the season and looking ahead to the next. And it was another open hand slap to the fans that were rocking Cleveland Browns Stadium only to be sent home disappointed. A Factory of Sadness indeed.
The Ravens came into the game with the 30th ranked run defense, without their heart and soul in Ray Lewis, and without their best cover corner, Ladarius Webb. They came in with a chip on their shoulder off their bye, chirping as they always do, despite getting their butts kicked by Houston two weeks prior. They are a team that had beaten the Browns 9 straight games. Think about that. Most of the Browns players probably had no idea because they hadn't been around for those losses, but the fans sure as hell have been. If any game had the chance to change a culture it was this one.
However, no matter how much improved the Browns are from a talent standpoint, they are handcuffed by their idiotic head coach. The Browns got the ball first, threw incomplete on 1st down, and gained nine yards on a Richardson run on 2nd. On 3rd and 1, against the 30th ranked run defense, Shurmur dialed up a pass, which ended up incomplete to Alex Smith, who wouldn't have even gained the first down had he caught it. Again, Baltimore came in with the 30th ranked run defense. But Shurmur likes to think he's smarter than everybody, and by God he's going to prove it. Browns punt and the Ravens, apparently ready to play, take 10 plays mixing in Ray Rice and Anquan Boldan to score a touchdown. Nothing like getting the home crowd into the game by being down 7-0 seven minutes into the game. The Browns get the ball back, pick up nine yards on 1st down, fumble the ball (recovered by Mitchell Schwartz) on second down for no gain, and face 3rd and 1 again. 3 stinkin feet, against the 30th ranked run defense in the league. Pat Shurmur, apparently in an attempt to show that he's no fool, dials up another pass. Weeden overthrows Chris Ogbonnaya who was wide open. The play was there, but it wouldn't have mattered as offensive pass interference was called on Josh Gordon.
Now apparently in today's NFL, when Jeff Triplette, who is by far the WORST official in the league is working the game, it's considered offensive pass interference when a receiver runs 10 yards down field and gets body checked to the ground by a defensive back. Horrible call in a game that had a few of them. More on Triplette later.
The Browns punt again, and the Ravens march down the field, mostly on the ground, and score another touchdown in 12 plays. 14-0 Ravens in the first quarter and by all appearances it looked like this one was going to get out of hand.
Then a curious thing happened. The Browns decided to run the ball and utilize their best asset, Trent Richardson. Richardson carried the load, coupled with a few Weeden completions, and the Browns moved the ball to the Ravens 17, where they had 1st and 10. They did burn a timeout following a Baltimore penalty because they couldn't get the play in, a theme that would repeat itself. After a 1 yard gain by Richardson, they dialed up a pass play that went incomplete. They then burned another timeout, presumably to get a really good play called in the red zone. That brilliant playcall ended up being a 2 yard pass to Alex Smith, and the Browns settle for a field goal. That theme would also repeat itself.
Dick Jauron did an excellent job adjusting to the offensive genius that is Cam Cameron and the Browns got the ball back. Behind the running of Richardson and a couple deep passes to Josh Gordon and Greg Little, the Browns moved into the red zone again. They ran the ball twice gaining 2 yards, and on 3rd and 8 they dialed up another creative pass, this one going 4 yards to Alex Smith. It doesn't take a Mensa member to figure out that you should throw the ball past the sticks on 3rd down, or that it may be a good idea to throw the ball into the endzone when your starting WR's are 6'3 and 6'2. Whether that's on Shurmur or Weeden I can't say but it is inexcusable and it's happening over and over. Regardless, the Browns settled for another Dawson field goal.
After forcing the Ravens to go 3 and out, the Browns got the ball back with 1:03 left in the half, at their own 39 yard line. There have been multiple instances that I've discussed of Shurmur mismanaging this situation at the end of first halfs, and this game would be no different. Down 14-6, with the ball in good field position, and 1 timeout, he dialed up a draw on first down. They gained 2 yards and wasted 26 seconds. They then proceeded to move the ball, with Weeden completing passes to Richardson, Watson, and Little. Weeden then hit Benjamin on a comeback for 19 yards down to the Baltimore 11, but they only had 5 seconds on the clock. They sent out Dawson rather than risk running out the clock by throwing one toward the endzone, but that wasn't in the gameplan anyway. That is inexcusable by a NFL head coach. I can't figure out why Shurmur cannot manage a two minute drill at the end of the half, but he can't. The Browns went into the locker room with some momentum and down 14-9.
Coming out of halftime, the Browns defense forced a three and out by the Ravens, and the Browns, riding some of that momentum, had a chance to take control of the game, with good field position at midfield. They gained 7 yards on first down on a run by Richardson, against the 30th ranked run defense in the league. Shurmur then dialed up a pass to Cameron that was nowhere close, and followed that up with another pass. Weeden got pressured and threw the ball to Jordan Cameron, who was streaking down the field and never turned around. The pass was picked off by Cary Williams. Again, Baltimore is not good against the run. You're at home. Your defense has tightened up. You need three yards to keep the drive moving. RUN THE BALL WITH RICHARDSON. And if you come up short run it again. You would think that a NFL coach would play to his teams strengths and the other teams weaknesses, but not our coach.
Baltimore took over at the Browns 39 and were moved back on a holding penalty on Michael Oher, who basically held Jabaal Sheard the entire game. The defense held, and forced another punt. The teams traded three and outs, the slugfest continuing between two offensive geniuses in Pat Shurmur and Cam Cameron.
The Browns had momentum at this point. They were winning the field position battle. The crowd was into it. The ran the ball and were aided by a personal foul on Baltimore, moving to the Ravens 30. Shurmur dialed up a reverse to Benjamin who gained nine yards, aided by a huge block on Ed Reed by Josh Gordon who nailed him in the chest with his shoulder. In the chest, with his shoulder, on a player trying to tackle a ball carrier. And Jeff Triplette calls Gordon for unnecessary roughness. It was a terrible call, although they called Baltimore's sideline for unsportsmanlike conduct. Terrible call. At this point the Ravens were on the ropes. The Browns were imposing their will. They were smacking the Ravens around just like I thought and hoped they would. Baltimore was ripe for the taking as the Browns moved into the redzone again, to the Bal 17. After a Richardson one yard run on first down, the Browns dialed up their favorite play, the two yard pass to Alex Smith, on 2nd and 9 this time. The third down pass was nearly intercepted but fell incomplete off the hands of Massaquoi, who probably should have caught the ball. Another red zone trip, another field goal, another failed opportunity to throw the ball into the endzone. Shurmurball at it's finest.
Dick Jauron's defense continued it's incredible play, forcing another three and out. The Factory of Sadness was pulsing with energy. The Browns were beginning to impose their will, the fans were beginning to believe that their optimism was well founded. They had the ball at their 46 yard line, against a tired defense. Aaaaand then a false start on Lauvao. And another one on Greco. And inexplicably, following those 2 penalties, Shurmur couldn't get a play called and had to burn a timeout. Shurmured. Following the timeout, Shumur called another one of his tremendous plays, a 1 yard pass to Richardson. Weeden hit Richardson again for an 8 yard gain, and on 3rd and 11 threw incomplete to Ogbonnaya, another pass well short of the line to gain. Browns had to punt, still trailing by 2.
Again (!) the Browns defense forced a 3 and out and the offense took over at their own 43. Following some good running by Richardson and a couple nice passes to Little and Gordon, they had 1st and 10 on Baltimore's 22. Richardson ran for 4 yards on first down, and after an incompletion, they had 3rd and 6 on the 18. Baltimore blitzed the no back formation, Weeden stood in the pocket and delivered a laser beam in stride to Josh Gordon, who slipped a tackle for the touchdown. The place went crazy, touchdown Browns! But remember, these are the Browns, and there was a flag on the field. Chris Ogbonnaya didn't line up properly, covering the tight end who released. 5 yard penalty, no touchdown. Gut wrenching. It's even more troubling that he knew he was supposed to be off the line of scrimmage, just failed to line up that way. Every week it seems like there is an incredibly stupid penalty, whether it's jumping offsides on a punt or on a fourth and 1, or getting pass interference with 4 seconds left in the half. Add this one to the list. The Browns still had a shot though, still had momentum, when Shurmur showed off his confidence in the offense and his quarterback by calling a DRAW on third and 11. A gutless move by a gutless coach, playing for a field goal to go up by a point rather than taking a shot at the endzone. That's Pat Shurmur in a nutshell. His players make stupid mistakes in an obvious attempt to imitate their coach, who makes stupid decisions and has no balls. Dawson kicked the field goal and the Browns took the lead, 15-14.
And then the inevitable happened, aided by Jeff Triplette, the worst official in the NFL. Baltimore finally got a first down and moved the ball to their own 42. Flacco threw incomplete on 2nd and 8, but Jeff Triplette, who is worse than any other official in the NFL, threw a flag and called roughing the passer on TJ Ward, who hit Flacco from behind on the shoulder pads. It was a terrible call, total bullcrap, magnified even more by the fact that Jabaal Sheard was blatantly
The Browns took over at the 20, with over four minutes left and two timeouts, needing a touchdown. They proceeded to gain six yards on first down, and threw incomplete on 2nd, bringing up 3rd and 4. For some unknown reason, they ran a 2 yard out to Greg Little, bringing up 4th down. With 3:57 remaining in the game, and two timeouts, from their own 28 Pat Shurmur decides to go for it. This is a guy who is so maddeningly conservative that he wouldn't go for a 4th and 1 with 6 minutes to go from the Colts 41 yard line just two weeks ago. So he decides to go for it, and reaches into his bag of tricks to come up with a slant pass. The exact same play they ran against the Colts when they had 4th and six two weeks ago (which didn't work). The whole sequence looked off from the beginning, and Weeden fired a 98 mile per hour fastball 15 feet over Greg Little's head. Ballgame. Baltimore added a field goal but that was it.
It more than likely sealed Shurmur's fate, who appeared to coach the game as if he was trying to prove a point to his critics rather than trying to win the game. From the 3rd and 1's early to the decision not to punt, to the communication problems, to playing for field goals and not putting the ball past the sticks or into the endzone, Shurmur showed his full complement of deficiencies as a head coach. He just doesn't have it, the game is too fast for him to act as a head coach and a playcaller, and he's too sensitive to the noise around him that comes with his job. I don't think he'll be fired until the end of the season, but wouldn't care less if they canned him today.
There were not a lot of positives to even discuss. The offensive line and Richardson played well, as did Little and Gordon from what I could see. The defense buckled down after a rough start and gave the offense a chance to put the game away on multiple occasions, but failed to make a stop when they needed to. It's good to have Phil Taylor back, Sheard and Jackson both played well.
Weeden was not very good, and didn't seem like a guy that was too happy about the coaching. He subtly called out the playcalling by saying they didn't expect to see so much cover 2 and weren't prepared for it. He also gave a couple terse no comments when asked about the "communication problems". He's a rookie and is going to struggle at times, but he did make a play when they needed one when he stood in and delivered the ball to Gordon on the touchdown that was negated.
One thing that crossed my mind on Weeden is that I think he feels really comfortable when Josh Cooper is on the field. Cooper was inactive for this game. Weeden's best performances have come when Cooper has been active and on the field on third downs. There's an obvious comfort factor there and I think that Weeden trusts Cooper a lot more than anyone else at this point. It may be coincidental I'm not sure, just something I thought about. I'd rather have Cooper out there on third downs than almost anyone else and I think Weeden feels the same.
Obviously this team has a long way to go, but it sure seems longer now than it did last week. We have two weeks to soak in this loss with the bye week next week. I was convinced that this was the game that would mark the turnaround for this franchise, the beginning of the rewards that this fanbase has surely reaped with all the crap we've had to deal with since 1995. Maybe that game will happen this year, maybe the Browns can grow from this loss. Maybe they put together a run towards the end of the season, beat the Steelers twice, learn how to win. Learn how to throw a haymaker when their opponents are on the ropes rather than trip over their own feet. But rather than doing it with a sense of optimism for this season, they'll be doing it with an eye on the next one.
Side note on the officiating. I hate Jeff Triplette and I think I would fight him if I saw him. He's a dirtbag and consistently screws the Browns, especially in Cleveland, as if it is this team's fault that he fired his flag into Orlando Brown's facemask (taking 3 years of football from him) and got his ass thrown down by Zeus. I don't generally complain about officiating because bad calls are a part of the game, but Triplette is awful and shouldn't be allowed to officiate in Cleveland.

Looks like USC Reggie
Ouch. Couldn't find Gordon's block on Reed but it looked a lot like this. Presumably no flag on OU on this play

Week 4
The best part about the Browns playing on Thursday is that I don't have to wait until Sunday to get pissed off watching the Browns. The prospects of writing a blog on an 0-16 team are strangely exciting, and it's looking more and more possible with each passing week. I hate the Ravens. I hate them so much. I just feel like they're a representation of everything the Browns should be, from the fact that it was our team first, to the fact that we passed on three of their best players in the draft, namely Ed Reed, Haloti Ngata, and now Torrey Smith (for William Green, Kam Wimbley, and Greg Little). Damn it all. Anyways...
Here are the two problems with the Browns that I think make the biggest differences in these games (except for all the other problems with the Browns). One, that we have a worse head coach than the other team EVERY SINGLE WEEK. Seriously name a head coach worse than ours. You can't. Two, there is no accountability, with the players or the coaches.
I already wrote about the struggles our coach has game planning here. This week, his team didn't go three and out on their first series. They didn't turn the ball over. They didn't look woefully unprepared to play. These things are positives.
However it was a 9-7 game at halftime. Of course, Baltimore made adjustments at halftime, while Shurmur and the Browns celebrated the progress they'd made in the first half and how hard they battled. So Baltimore marched down the field and scored, making it 16-7, in the rain. After halftime, Trent Richardson, the Browns best and some would say only weapon, got 4 rushes. FOUR. They threw 27 passes. This is not the 2001 Ravens. They can be run on. I'll say Brandon Weeden looked pretty good, but he'd better learn how to look off his primary receiver or he's going to throw a lot of pick sixes. But really, 4 rushes to Richardson in the second half of a close road game in lousy weather? 5 rushes total in the half? C'mon Shurmur. Our coach lost the idiot battle to Cam Cameron (who also loves ignoring his best offensive player) nearly an impossible task.
Also, for the second week in a row, we get the ball with a minute left in the half (after calling timeout to save time) and run the ball on our first play. IDIOTIC. It's like our coach is scared to even think about being aggressive. Shurmur.
Again, the recap of this game is short and simple. We played well enough on offense to keep it close but we can't make a play when we need to. We played well enough on defense but committed a stupid penalty with 4 minutes left (yeah you Buster) that cost us getting the ball back with more time for a chance to win. We ignore our best offensive player for long stretches of the game. Phil Dawson is the only chance we have to win games this year.
But sadly we played pretty well on offense, defense, and special teams and still lost by 7. It's gonna be a long year.
But it's the lack of accountability that makes me the most angry about this team. I'm not saying go out and fire everybody, or bench everybody for making a mistake now and again. But I'm sick of seeing this team make the same damn mistakes every week. Last year, we led the league in drops. If we're not first this season we've got to be close. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Why the hell do we expect Greg Little to start catching the ball now? Or any of these guys? Is it time to hold someone accountable? These guys are lucky I'm not the GM, because I'd fire the receivers coach yesterday. And Greg Little would be inactive for at least a month, if not longer. He wouldn't see the field until I thought he was going to be able to get through a game without a drop. He's killing this team.
Where the hell is Josh Gordon? Was he this far behind from a development standpoint, or is it a coaching issue?
Except for Phil Dawson, who is phenomenal, our special teams is below average. Reggie Hodges has been horrible all season. Our coverage units were adequate this week at least, but have been awful for most of the season. Someone should go, probably Hodges first. Accountability.
And Alex Mack just stinks. I don't watch coaches tape but I can see he is awful in real time. I honestly think there are 20-25 starting centers that are better than him in the NFL. I can't frigging believe we took that guy in the first round over the son of a Browns legend. Thanks Mangini you dummy.
We're staring 0-5 in the face next week, when we're at the Giants, and then maybe have a shot at a win or two when we're home against Cincinnati and at Indy. Jimmy Haslam should take over as sometime around then, and we should see if the new owner believes in "progress" and "battling" or accountability fairly quickly.
I hated this by the way. Glad Cribbs is okay.
