Week 13 - 2014 - Bills

As the snow melted in Buffalo on an unseasonably warm day, so did the Browns playoff hopes.  They aren't out of it, but the road got tougher following a 26-10 beatdown by the Bills.  Brian Hoyer was awful for the third straight game, and may have seen the his last game as a starter for the Browns.  His fall from grace has been steady, and the Browns offense has fallen with him.  In the past 3 games he has completed 50.1% of his passes, he has thrown 1 touchdown, and 5 interceptions.  He has thrown 9 interceptions and 5 touchdowns in his past 8 games.  He was horrible on Sunday, not even his biggest supporters can defend that performance.  Johnny Manziel came in and led an impressive drive, looked like he gave the team a spark, and looks to be the quarterback that will lead this late season playoff push.  But the Browns laid an egg, and it was ugly.

Hoyer and the Browns' biggest problem in the past few games has been the inability to generate points off of turnovers.  The defense gave him the ball twice in Atlanta, which he and the offense turned into two field goals.  That is unacceptable, and that and the fact that Hoyer threw three picks were the only reasons that the Falcons were in the game.  Against Buffalo, the defense again came up with 2 interceptions, which resulted in zero points.  On the second turnover they got the ball on Buffalo's 30 yard line and proceeded to get stuffed on a run, throw a one yard pass to a fullback, and get sacked to push them out of field goal range.  I'm not sure I've even seen a team spit in the face of momentum like the Browns do.  It was pathetic.

The defense held the Bills to 2-15 on third downs.  The Bills were 0-10 at one point with a 14-3 lead.  What more can a defense do? 

The Browns were not beaten by the Bills offense, they were beaten by the Bills defense and they lost the special teams battle.  And they were called for 10 penalties, almost all of them untimely.  Jerome Boger is an awful referee.

Kyle Shanahan did not call his best game in my opinion.  Too many outside runs against a fast Bills defense and a stacked box.  It's hard to call games when your quarterback can't beat an 8 man box though, and Brian Hoyer was not beating anyone on Sunday.  His chemistry was still clearly off with Josh Gordon, who did not have a great game either.  But forcing passes into triple coverage is inexcusable, and Hoyer did that on multiple occasions.  Thus the switch at quarterback, and the first real live action for Johnny Manziel.  Manziel showed a live arm and excellent mobility on the touchdown drive.  I personally don't think they are going to go back to Brian Hoyer.  I think that Johnny Manziel fits Kyle Shanahan's offense perfectly.  I think that if Manziel is the starter the Browns will be in the shotgun or pistol more, I think Shanahan will scheme to utilize Manziel's quickness and speed, and I think there will be both some excitement and some rookie mistakes.  But I don't think they will go back, and I don't think they should.  We've seen the best of Brian Hoyer, and that was 8 weeks ago.  He has regressed.

So the Browns will be making a playoff push with (possibly) a rookie quarterback, two rookie running backs, a third string center, a rookie guard, and their star receiver still working out the kinks following a 10 game suspension.  It should be quite a ride, but these guys are growing up in a winning culture and gaining experience which should be invaluable to them.

Speaking of rookie running backs, that fumble by Terrance West was the play of the game.  That is inexcusable.  It might be time to see what Glenn Winston has.  Running backs cannot fumble the ball.  Period.  That was a game changing turnover.  It was TERRIBLE.  Joe Thomas also had the worst game I can remember him having.  Ever.  It was just a mess on offense.

Defensively the Browns played well, they harassed Orton, they held the Bills to 3.5 yards per carry, and they forced the two turnovers.  I'm not sure what else a defense can do other than score points themselves.  The offense and special teams let the Browns down on Sunday.

And those special teams, boy they just continue to let the Browns down.  I hope Chris Tabor has his bags packed and is out on the first bus.  His unit continues its pathetic ineptitude, Billy Cundiff has now missed a field goal in four straight games.  4.  Straight.  Games.  The media likes to make fun of the fans adulation towards Phil Dawson but geez can't we get ANYONE in here that can make 37 yard field goals?  CUNDIFF IS TERRIBLE.  TABOR YOU ARE THE WORST.  Benjamin was running backwards on punt returns, then tripping over his own feet.  They embarrass themselves on a new level weekly.  Pure hot garbage.

It was a tough loss for the Browns, but it may mark the beginning of a new era.  I know there are some fans who will now root against Johnny Manziel out of pure spite.  Go ahead.  There shouldn't be this divide but there is.  If Manziel wins they'll be the first ones jumping back on the bandwagon.  But one thing is clear, Brian Hoyer wasn't getting it done.  It's Manziel's turn to see if he can right the ship and lead this team into the playoffs.  It may have been a week too late, but it's his turn now.  The Browns future is now, it should be a wild ride for the last 4 games.

Week 11 - 2014 - Texans

Well that was a fun 10 days.  10 days of joy and bliss in first place for the Browns.  10 days to get ready for the 4-5 Texans, at home, with their best offensive player out and Ryan Mallett making his first start.  10 days to get ready.  And it only took a little over three hours to erase all those good feelings with a vomitous effort in front of the Dawg Pound.  The Browns were out coached, out classed, out-physicaled, and outscored 23-7 by the visiting Texans.  They were thoroughly beaten in all phases, it was as bad this week as it was good last.  It was a short stay in the penthouse for the Browns.

Everyone was awful.  I can't think of a single player that played well, possibly with the exception of Joe Thomas and Joe Haden.  Brian Hoyer stunk the place up.  But this game was lost by the coaches.

There was no reason not to come out with an aggressive defensive gameplan.  Ryan Mallett, strong armed statue, was making his first career start.  And while Ryan Mallett has all the arm talent on the planet, decision making has never been his strong suit.  So frankly, it seems easy to see that the way to beat him is by getting pressure in his face, moving him around in the pocket, and letting him make bad choices.  So what did defensive minded Mike Pettine and his hand picked defense coordinator Jim O'Neil do?  They sat back in coverage and let Mallett get comfortable.  They rarely brought pressure, instead playing passive.  This game was lost in the first quarter, when they didn't rattle Mallett.  He settled in, and the Texans offense starting dominating.  It makes no sense.  I have no idea what the Browns were trying to do.

I'll even blast Kyle Shanahan, who I really really like, because he didn't call his best game either.  Even if you are a team that likes to run to the right like the Browns are, you don't run at JJ Watt.  Maybe once or twice.  But your gameplan should not be to run wide zone toss plays at the best defensive lineman in football.  But it seems like the Browns were stubbornly going to attempt to do just that.  Again, it makes no sense.  It will be interesting to see what this run game looks like with Josh Gordon and Jordan Cameron, but I'm not sure it would have made a difference in this one. 

And Chris Tabor, the worst special teams coach in the league, had his unit performing at the level we've all come to expect.  Missed field goal.  Check.  Kickoff return for touchdown called back by a penalty.  Check.  Snap over the punters head.  Check.  Classic Tabor.  Absolute garbage coach.

So yeah, the coaches were a big part of the problem.  The players were the other part.  Brian Hoyer, scatter passer, was terrible.  He's inaccurate as it is but was even more off against the Texans, owners of the 26th ranked pass defense in the league.  He looked uncomfortable from the beginning.  The run game was somewhat effective before it was abandoned in the 4th quarter.  Isaiah Crowell got the start and looked good until he fumbled the ball on the Texans 20 yard line going in.  It is unacceptable and that play really turned the game around, as the Texans took advantage of the turnover and scored before the half.  You cannot turn the ball over as a running back and he's now fumbled 4 times in the past 5 games.  Ben Tate had 2 carries for negative 9 yards, and then whined some more in the locker room after the game.  He can get on the first bus out of town and I don't think too many people would miss him.  Miles Austin had some brutal dropped passes.  The whole offense looked out of sync from the beginning.  It was extremely disappointing.  And yeah JJ Watt is good, I get that.  But this was an abysmal performance.

The defense was bad as well.  And I blame the coaches for most of those problems, but there are bigger issues starting to bubble up to the surface, starting with the toll that injuries are starting to take.  The defensive line has been ravaged by injury and with Phil Taylor now on the IR it isn't going to get any better.  They were worn down by the Texan offensive line, and depth is a big time concern.  Jabaal Sheard went down with an injury as well, and that is really bad news.  Additionally Karlos Dansby sustained a knee injury.  If those two are out for an extended amount of time the Browns are in big big trouble.  The run defense was pathetic, letting Alfred Blue carve them up.  If Foster plays I have to think the Texans win by 30.  They let Mallett and the Texan offense get comfortable, and played on their heels the entire game.  The soft coverage and passive play was incredibly frustrating to watch.  It was extremely disappointing, I can't use that word enough.  Disappointing is the best adjective to describe almost every aspect of that game by the Browns.

So for 10 days the Browns were on top.  They were 6-3 and in first place in the AFC North.  The P word was starting to seem more and more realistic.  And then they had an incredible failure from the top down.  This was a bad loss, at home, to a team that they should have beat.  If they have any realistic expectations of making the playoffs they need to win on the road next week in Atlanta and then again the following week in Buffalo.  Another performance like this against the Falcons and it should be Johnny Football time.  So the pressure is on Brian Hoyer and this team.  How they handle that will dictate the direction of the season.  Will it be like the last 10 days?  Or the previous 15 years?

Week 6 - 2014 - Steelers

You could feel it in the air.  The excitement had been building all week.  The weather was perfect.  The most important game since 1999 they said.  But with the Browns, there's always that feeling.  That feeling that the other shoe is about to drop.  And why shouldn't we be nervous?  Ben Roethlisberger was 18-1 against the Browns.  The Steelers had won 27 of the past 32 meetings since 1999, including that awful playoff loss in 2003.  We've seen just about everything go wrong that could go wrong, we've been let down before.  So yeah, with the excitement of the game there was that nervousness that accompanies any hope for these Browns.  But not this Sunday, not these Browns.  This day was Cleveland's.  This day belonged to the Browns.  And it wasn't a nailbiter.  There was no last minute heartbreak in the offing.  Nope.  This day, the Browns took the fight to their old nemesis, the bully that had beaten them up and down over and over.  They took the fight to them and kicked their asses.  The Steelers, with their aging stars, their suspect defense, their sex predator quarterback, turned tail and ran back down the turnpike after a thorough beating.  AND IT WAS AWESOME.  The Browns whooped the Steelers 31-10 in front of the home crowd.

It was a big win.  It was in the division and it was a home game.  So yeah it would have been important if it was Baltimore or Cincinnati.  But this was a big one psychologically.  The Browns, as discussed before about Baltimore, needed to beat Pittsburgh to announce that they aren't a punching bag anymore.  That the trash that had been going on for the past 15 years wasn't going to happen again.  They failed that test against Baltimore.  They found a way to lose.  But Sunday they had a mulligan, got a redo.  Another opportunity to announce their legitimacy.  And they took full advantage.  This wasn't the win in the freezing cold in a lost season under Eric Mangini.  This wasn't the escape against Charlie Batch when they forced 8 turnovers and barely managed a victory.  This was a legit big game victory against their rival.  They dominated up front on offense.  They found ways to get off the field on defense.  And they played mistake free special teams.  And that my friends will win a lot of football games.

The Steelers plan was clear from the beginning.  They were going to run the ball and wear down a thin defensive front that was missing some key players.  The plan looked like it was going to work for the first quarter.  But the bend but don't break Browns held the Steelers to a field goal made and a field goal botched, and then the offense got going, and they never looked back.  The Browns scored on three straight drives in the second quarter, and Pittsburgh never recovered.  Brian Hoyer had perhaps the best 8-17, 217 yard 1 TD performance I've seen in my lifetime.  He was completely in command of the offense.  His pass to Jordan Cameron on the second Browns touchdown was a thing of beauty.  Just enough air to get it over the oft out of position Troy Polamalu and just out of the reach of Cortez Allen.  It was a beaut.  He was outstanding.  Brian Hoyer is better than I ever thought he could be, and I'm really glad to be wrong about him.  He's now 6-2 as a Browns starter.

Kyle Shanahan called another gem of a game.  The success of the running game makes play action passing incredibly effective.  And the Browns had success running the ball.  They averaged 4.2 yards per rush on their 38 runs, but that average is brought down by a fourth quarter where they were just running out the clock.  Ben Tate and Isaiah Crowell ran hard behind an offensive line that is as good as any offensive line in the NFL.  Losing Alex Mack will hurt.  A lot.  I will admit I've been hard on old Alex.  But he is really great in this scheme and his injury is going to hurt.  It's clear by the reaction to the injury how respected he is by his teammates.  But they were still able to run the ball after his injury, and that is part scheme and part running back talent on this team.  Crowell needs to hold onto the football but he and Tate played very well.  And lets be honest the Steelers defense is not that good.  In the 6 quarters against Pittsburgh after that abysmal first half in the opener the Browns have outscored the Steelers 55-13.  That is not a fluke.  That is one team being better than the other.

Defensively this was the best the Browns have played all year.  They had multiple contributors missing and were still able to limit what the Steelers were able to do.  They bottled up LeVeon Bell, and mostly contained Antonio Brown.  They seemed to dial the pressure down a bit, which helped take some heat off Haden and Skrine, both of whom played pretty good football.  The strategy seemed similar to the Saints game, giving up a little on the ground and playing more coverage.  But the best thing the defense did was tackle, they tackled better than they have all season.  There were not too many free yards for the Steelers, they earned what they got which wasn't much.  And not for nothing but Todd Haley is an idiot.  I have no idea why he would run the ball on first and second downs, get into third and short, and pass, but hey...

But this was a team win.  The whole team seemed to play well, they beat the Steelers in just about every facet of the game.  And what matters is that they are now 3-2, with an extremely soft next few games.  They have a chance to make some noise in the AFC.  And man will this offense look nice with Josh Gordon, and that day is coming.  But the biggest takeaway from this win is that they are finally a better team than the Steelers.  This is the beginning of the Browns time, the Steelers time has past.  And those frontrunning fairweather fans know it.  There seemed to be a lot less black and gold in the crowd than usual.  And they made the sad walk this time, marching out to joyful barking.  This Browns team took a big step, and it was awesome.

Week 5 - 2014 - Titans

Well that was an interesting game.  The Browns won yesterday, 29-28 over the Titans.  Just your average 25 point comeback on the road, the largest deficit ever made up on the road in NFL history, and the largest comeback in Browns history.  Once again they fell behind in the first half, only to have Brian Hoyer lead them to victory.  This Brian Hoyer guy is moving rapidly from "game manager" to "captain comeback" and "a winner" if you're keeping score on quarterback cliches.  How they ever got down 28-3 to the Titans is another story, but the fact is they won, and as we all know it's a results based business.  The Browns have evened up their record at 2-2, with all four games decided by a field goal or less, and all 4 games decided in the final 2 minutes.  The Kardiac Kids are back.

Let's start with the Titans, who are basically the Ravens without the success.  They were owned by a scumbag named Bud Adams who moved them from Houston where they were the Oilers.  Adams basically held Houston hostage for 10 years before moving the team, much like Art Modell did here.  Adams employed huge ahole Jeff Fisher for 16 (!) years.  Jeff Fisher is the WORST.  They also decided it was a good idea to honor Rob Bironas, their former kicker, before the game and with a decal on their helmets.  What happened to Rob Bironas you ask?  Well a few weeks ago he got ridiculously drunk, went driving, nearly ran two cars off the road (explicitly threatening to kill one carload of people) before smashing his own vehicle into a tree, killing himself.  (For the record it's obviously a horrible tragedy that Bironas died but I'm not sure the manner he did is something that you should celebrate.)  They also drafted noted scumbag Taylor Lewan, Michigan Man.  Your Tenneessee Titans everyone.

Going into the game with the Browns, the Titans were 1-3.  They had lost 3 straight games, getting outscored 100-34 in the process.  They hadn't scored a point in the first quarter all season.  They were led on offense by Jake Locker, who should have been a welcomed sight to the Browns after facing Ben Roethlisberger, Drew Brees, and Joe Flacco, all Super Bowl champion quarterbacks.  Basically, the Titans stink, and the Browns were coming off a bye to shore up their defensive problems.  It should be an easy win, right?  But part of the problem is that teams also look at the Browns as easy wins.  That's part of the reputation that this Browns team needs to shake.  And the Titans came out like they were the better team, and they expected to win.  And the Browns came out and looked like the team that played that disgusting first half against the Steelers.  They couldn't tackle.  They couldn't get off blocks.  They couldn't get off the field on third down against a team that was the worst in the league at converting them.  They certainly couldn't cover anyone.  They were rushing six and getting no pressure.  They fell behind 28-3, it was awful.  The best thing that happened to the Browns in the first 25 minutes or so was that Jake Locker hit his thumb on Buster Skrine's helmet and had to leave the game.  That sent Charlie Whitehurst into the game, one of Nashville's most beautiful people.  And while that didn't help immediately with Whitehurst torching Buster Skine, once Charlie Whitehurst realized that he's Charlie Whitehurst, the Browns were able to start chipping away.

It was not a pleasant first half though.  Mike Pettine, I kind of think your team should have been a little more prepared, a little more ready to play.  Pettine is a defensive guy, that's his background.  But man his defense has looked bad at times.  It seems clear that what he wants to do right now on defense, isolating corners in one on one coverage and pressuring the quarterback, he cannot.  It hasn't worked.  Haden, Skrine, and Gilbert have all been torched at times.  It may be time to pare it back a little.  I still wonder what is going on with the defensive play calling, if it's O'Neil or if it's Pettine.  Whatever is going on, it hasn't looked good, especially early in games.  This is a very poor tackling team also.  The Browns were able to score a touchdown before the half and went into the locker room down 28-10. 

And much like the Pittsburgh game, they came out of the locker room and stuck with the plan.  I love Kyle Shanahan.  I think there were times that he could have run the ball even more.  On both possessions that the Browns went for it on fourth down and were stopped in the second half I thought they could have kept pounding with the run game, but it's easy to second guess.  But he never abandoned the run game.  They never panicked.  They went more uptempo, and it worked (shocking), and they were able to move the ball in the second half.  The balance on offense is outstanding, for the year they've had 138 pass plays and 127 runs.  Ben Tate looked great.  Travis Benjamin went from goat to hero with two great touchdown catches.  Amazing how no one talks about the receivers anymore.  Hawkins, Gabriel, Austin and Benjamin all made big plays in the second half.  And Hoyer is becoming captain clutch.

There were other factors that worked into this comeback, most notably that the Titans stink and make stupid plays and coaching decisions.  Penalties by the Titans wiped out two HUGE Browns turnovers.  One was on a Benjamin muffed punt (probably need to leave him off of punt returns), and one was on an interception.  So those were huge plays in the game that went the Browns way (that even feels weird to type).  And Ken Whisenhunt made some absolutely idiotic coaching decisions, from throwing the ball with the lead 3 straight plays when they needed to run the clock out to the ill-fated quarterback sneak on 4th and 1 that gave the ball back to the Browns in Titan territory.  He exasperated the problem by challenging the play and burning a timeout.  The Titans are a bad team.  The Browns outgained the Titans in yardage in the second half 278 to 126, and scored the last 26 points of the game.  However, the Browns hadn't won a road game since last year against Minnesota, losing their previous 7, so this was a big win regardless of the opponent.  And credit has to go to Mike Pettine for challenging the spot on that key 3rd down reception by Walker.  Pettine won the challenge and that proved to be a gamechanger.  And the special teams shockingly didn't blow it, and Tank Carder made a huge play, which just goes to show what a weird weird game this was.  Carder's blocked punt was the first by the Browns since November 2003.

The Browns are back to .500, 2-2, with the Steelers coming to town next Sunday.  After that it goes at Jacksonville, home against Oakland and Tampa Bay, at Cincinnati, then home against Houston.  They really do have a chance to make some noise, that is not a murder's row of opponents.  They have scored at least 21 points in their first four games for the first time since 1969.  They are stressful but apparently never out of the game.  They have a local boy leading them.  There is a lot to like here.  Although it wasn't pretty, they won.  And a win is a win.  The Kardiac Kids are back, keep your defibulators close by.

Week 2 2014 - Saints

I've been to many home openers over the past 16 seasons.  I had yet to see them win an opener, until yesterday.  It was always the sad walk back over the bridge, the sad angry walk.  The sad lowering of expectations.  The sadness and fear that it's going to be another long, lousy season.  Not yesterday.  Yesterday that walk was pure joy.  It had been 10 years since they won their first home game, when Butch Davis and Jeff Garcia led the Browns to a victory over the Ravens.  10 freaking years, until yesterday.  So apparently the right combination of people to go to a game with to see a victory is Biff, Jack, Peebs, and DeSantis.  Thanks again Biffer.

But I digress.  The Browns beat the Saints yesterday, 26-24.  The Browns beat the Saints in front of a LOUD and rowdy crowd.  Brian Hoyer led the Browns on a game winning drive, and the Browns beat the Saints.  The defense held Drew Brees in check for the most part, and the Browns beat the Saints, in their home opener, 26-24 running their record to 1-1.  It just feels good to say.  The Browns won.

For what it's worth in terms of making the playoffs, teams that start 0-2 only make the playoffs 11% of the time, so they really had to win this game in order to stay ahead of the chains, so to speak.  41% of 1-1 teams make them.  Had to have this one, and they got it.

There are a few takeaways from the big win. 

First off, and this is coming from a big time Johnny Manziel guy, this is Brian Hoyer's team.  Hoyer is now 4-1 as a starter for the Browns.  He also has not turned the ball over in his last 4 starts.  He is efficient, he is a leader, and he has a knack for turning it on when he needs to.  It's hard not to root for him, he's one of us.  And this is his team, and while I had the timetable for Johnny Football taking over as after the bye, it seems apparent that Johnny will have to wait.  I'd love to see Hoyer throw with more accuracy early in the game, but at least today that seems like nitpicking.

Manziel did make his debut, on a package of plays in the 3rd quarter, but I'm not sure how effective that package will be assuming it continues.  If it did anything it pissed Brian Hoyer off, because he was 15-19 following Manziel's insertion.  And Kyle Shanahan is the best offensive coordinator we've had here in a long time.  And yes I'm basing that off of two games.  The guy can call a game.

The two rookie running backs looked impressive.  They both fit Shanahan's one-cut zone blocking scheme.  Hawkins is a great little receiver.  And you have to give Gary Barnidge credit, he had his best game as a Brown, his biggest play was the catch on the 4th down conversion on the final drive.

Everyone used to love Rob Ryan while he was here, but that last drive was classic Rob Ryan.  Blitz but don't get to the quarterback and leave a wide receiver wide open.  Classic.  Rob.  Ryan.  Sean Payton didn't appreciate it either it seems.

Defensively, that was an impressive performance.  Except for Jimmy Graham, who is almost impossible to cover, the Browns defense limited the Saints' high powered offense.  Karlos Dansby has already made more plays in two games than D'Qwell Jackson did in 8 years here.  He is awesome.  Paul Kruger looks GREAT.  He looks like a totally different player.  Pettine's defense clearly had Brees confused in the beginning of the game, and they made a huge play when they needed to, when Dansby sacked Brees on a 3rd and 7, knocking the Saints out of field goal range and giving the Browns the ball back with a chance to win the game.  The defense was aggressive all game.  All things considered they played great.  They even added a pick 6 by my man Tashaun Gipson.  The Saints ran the ball better than you would have expected them to, but it's pick your poison with them.

And although the special teams had the hiccup on the extra point, they were decent enough.  K'wuan Williams had some big hits on kick coverage.  And of course, Cundiff hit the game winner from 26 yards.

But again, the sun shines brighter around here when the Browns win.  People smile more.  The flowers smell better.  Life is just a little more pleasant.  And in terms of the season, this is a big win for the Browns.  It's big because it was at home, against a good team, and it's big because 0-2 is probably too big of a hole for this team to dig out of.  Let's see if Hoyer can keep the magic going next week against the Ravens, and keep that walk from the stadium joyous.
